PESHAWAR: Muharram 9 processions passed away peacefully in the provincial capital and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday amid tight security.

Cellular phone signals were suspended and shopping malls were closed.

In the provincial capital, the main procession on Muharram 9 started from Hussainiya Hall Imambargah on Saddar Road.

The procession traveled through various routes and reached back to where it started.

Mourners gathered in the Husseiniya Hall, held alms and beat their breasts.

Under security arrangements, participants were allowed to walk through the gates after a body search.

The mourning procession passed through the traditional route where sabils (water and syrup distribution places) were set up at various places along the way.

One or two processions were also taken out from Peshawar city. Fool proof security was provided to all the processions. The procession routes were also monitored by drone cameras and close circuit television cameras.

Rescue 1122 teams were also deployed on the procession routes to provide emergency treatment to the mourners.

The main procession of 9th Muharram was taken out from Hussainiya Hall Imambargah on Saddar Road.

During the last two days of Muharram, more than 8,000 police were deployed in the provincial capital for security with the help of the Army and Frontier Constabulary.

Most of the bazaars and roads in Saddar Road and adjoining areas of the city were closed.

Security has been beefed up in the provincial capital and other KP districts following the arrests of alleged terrorists in Peshawar and Charsadda.

Police officers were instructed to wear bulletproof jackets and helmets while on duty.

A total of 43 gun points have been set up in Peshawar, while security has been beefed up at 64 entrances to the city.

Capital City Police Officer Muhammad Ali Gandapur, Commissioner Peshawar Amjad Ali Khan along with his deputies visited various areas of the provincial capital to inspect the Muharram security arrangements.

He directed the police officials to remain vigilant and ensure foolproof security for the processions and gatherings.

Haripur: Muharram 9 was celebrated in Haripur amid tight security.

The district was declared sensitive and mobile service was suspended. Fool-proof security arrangements were made for the peace of Muharram.

The 9 Muharram procession was taken out from Imambargah Imamiya Sajjadia Mohalla Motiyan and ended at Imambargah Qadimiya Mohalla Chowki Police.

The mourners showed heartbeat and recited lamentations along the way, which was heavily surrounded by police and elite force personnel.

Walk-through gates were set up to screen participants, including mourners, and the procession was monitored by drone cameras, video recordings and CCTV cameras installed along the procession route.

Processions were also held in Parachinar, Hangu, Mansehra and other parts of the province.
